I went for a lovely rambling 3 hour walk with one of my very favourite dogs yesterday on a beautiful sunny early May Day. The Heath was green and verdant, and because it hasn't rained for a while, there weren't the usual boggy mud sinkholes everywhere :-)
I've known Arney since he was a tiny round ball of fluff, and looked like a baby panda.
When he was a puppy, he would give the best hugs: he'd put both paws around your neck and tuck his face under your chin and just snuggle in your arms for as long as you held him.
He's the best dog, I'd go as far as to say he's near perfect!
He gives the best and most enthusiastic welcomes, and though he's all grown up now, would still settle in to snuggle for days if you let him. Walking him is a delight: he stays within eyeshot at all times, and if he runs ahead, will always turn and wait for you to catch up. If you throw a stick for him, he goes into ecstasies and will fetch it and bring it back to you over and over again, tail wagging furiously.
He's a sensitive and intelligent dog, very in tune with the humans around him, and it shows on his face and in the attention he pays to you at all times. I had my camera with me, and it was a joy to capture his delight in being out on the Heath, in sniffing every leaf and best of all, running after multitudes of sticks.
Every dog is so different, their personalities and souls shine when you walk with them, you get to know their quirks and mannerisms, their likes and dislikes, the way they interact with you and the world around them.
I love to photograph that, to capture their essence on film. To see and record what makes them uniquely themselves.
