I went out for a gloriously muddy 4 hour ramble on Hampstead Heath in the bright winter sunshine today.
Its something I love to do anyway, but was made extra special by the presence of my beautiful ramble buddy. I think she's a Greyhound / Border Collie cross, so has energy to burn, and is pure muscle on muscle. She is also my faithful shadow when with me, who always has me in her line of sight at all times. She loves to sprint, and will (literally) run huge circles round all the dog friends she meets, often inciting a Pied Piper chase with dogs large and small, but luckily her recall is excellent, so she always comes back! I dog-sit for her a few times a week, and she's a joy to look after.
We both thoroughly enjoyed our day. It was so lovely and sunny, and the light was fantastic. We met some really nice, friendly people and dogs, and rambled through the woods in the dappled sunlight and fresh, crisp air.
And I got to take lots of photos.
I do so love watching the different expressions and body language of animals, they are so very present and honest. So in the moment. And often very comical. They are all such unique individuals, each with their own fully formed personalities and quirks and mannerisms. The essence that is them is so true to themselves.
I love to try to capture this in photos. Capture the unique presence and personality that makes them, them.
On a photoshoot with animals, you can't really direct them as you would people, so it is down to me to connect with them, make them feel comfortable, move around them, watch them and really see them, feel their energy, and allow their essential selves and souls to meet me through the camera lens.
it is such a lovely thing to do, I enjoy it hugely. It is a privilege to be trusted with people's much loved pets, and such a pleasure to be able to get to know them and to create memories of a specific day in their lives. I hope to continue to be able to do this for many years to come.
